GB ATHLETES LOOKING FOR MEDAL GLORY!

05/10/07- Shanghai. An eight strong Great Britain athletics squad is gearing up for the greatest challenge of their lives on the other side of the world!

The athletes form part of the Great Britain Special Olympics squad competing in the Shanghai World Games (Oct 2nd – Oct 11th), the biggest sporting event on the planet in 2007.

Catherine Earl (Cleveland), Amelie Martin (Worcestershire), Anne Marie Moran (Leeds), Sharon Williamson (Dundee), Barry Ward (Glasgow), Joe Strohm (Harpenden), Paul Chanaryn (Enfield) and Stephen Morris (Cardiff) are in the 159 member Team GB competing in 20 different sports in the twelfth summer World Games that features over 7200 athletes with learning disabilities from 160 nations.

“It’s a great experience being in China and I’m hoping to come back with a medal!” exclaimed 50-year-old Paul, the oldest athlete in the entire Great Britain squad. They will be competing over the course of the next week in the imposing Shanghai Stadium.

Head Coach Janet Longden from Cleveland has high hopes for the squad: “All of the members of the athletics team have trained hard since being selected to represent Great Britain a year ago and this will be an amazing experience for all of them.”
