Cycling Athlete Andrew Holdham

The Welsh Squad

Location: Cardiff
Coach: Hilary Holtam

Andrew HoldhamAndrew is 34 years old. He has been competing in Special Olympics sports for the past 20 years. He has taken part in national games and world games.

Because Andrew works during the week, he has to fit his cycle training around his other commitments. But he has great support from his dad Bob Holdham, also a cyclist. They regularly do cycle training sessions of 30 to 40 km.

Coach Hilary says: “Andrew is an extraordinary young man. He regularly cycles quite amazing distances. His stamina and endurance are impressive. He just loves cycling and that’s what he’s doing every chance he has.”

In Shanghai Andrew will compete in the 1km and 10km races. He is very disciplined about training for the big event and is always setting himself increasingly challenging targets.

Coach Hilary says: “Andrew always knows exactly his own times and the others’ times over each distance. He loves to set challenging targets for himself and the rest of the squad. And as soon as he’s achieved one of those targets he’s straight on to the next and determined to push himself to reach it.”
