Sailing Athlete Lee Cox
Location: Southsea, near Portsmouth, Hampshire
Lee is 27 years old. He has been involved with Special Olympics for 4 years and has been sailing for 3 of those.
Lee says: “I just enjoy sailing. I do steering the boat, turning it. It’s fun, even when we capsize. And I like meeting people, making friends.
Lee trains once a week with his local squad and takes part in a number of competitions throughout the year. He won a silver medal with his sailing partner Jo Shepherd at the last SOGB national summer games in Glasgow.
Lee says: “We did well in Glasgow and won gold at a London regatta. When we win medals it feels really good. I feel proud.”
Lee and Jo will be sailing in the world games at Level 3 with their unified partner Ray Stead. It’s their biggest event so far.
Ray says: “In Shanghai we’ll be looking to beat the Spanish team who just kept us from the top in Glasgow. And we’re going to come back with a gold medal.”
Lee and Ray Stead are also hoping to be selected to compete in their first ever mainstream sailing competition at the London Regatta in September.
