Sailing Athlete Ray Stead
Location: Portsmouth, Hampshire
Ray is 52 years old. He has sailed with Special Olympics for the past 4 years and will be the unified partner to Lee and Jo in the world games. Ray says the two crew have made such impressive progress his role is now relegated to little more than a ‘safety feature’.
“In sailing you’re constantly multi-tasking, reading not just the wind but the tide, the water conditions and constantly adjusting the boat. So at this level for the athletes it’s very demanding work. But I’ve seen Lee and Jo have come on in leaps and bounds. Now it’s the two of them at the helm, doing all the sailing, make the decisions. They’re very good. I’m proud of what they’ve achieved.”
