Bowling for Shanghai
A GWENT man is to represent Great Britain at the Special Olympics in China.
George Randall, 42, from Risca, has learning difficulties and has been a member of the ten-pin bowling team Mega Allsorts in Risca for around seven years.
He recently found out he is one of 15 Welsh athletes picked to represent Britain in Shanghai. And the local community have rallied round, raising more than £2,000 to send him on the 11-day trip.
Mum June Randall, from Risca, said: "We're very proud. It's a big achievement because there are very few people from Wales going out. It was a real surprise to hear he had made the team. When we had the letter to say he'd been picked it was marvellous.
"He is well-known in Risca because he works at the leisure centre twice a week. The local community have been absolutely wonderful. I don't know exactly how much was raised but I heard it was more than the £2,000 he needed.
"He's very excited about going out there. He really enjoys the ten pin bowling and he's very good at it."
The family were presented with a cheque at the Risca Working Men's Club on Sunday night.
George is due to fly out to China on September 26, and the games start on October 2.
